What are the Main Types of Carpet Sold at our Cincinnati Floor Store?

Cincy Preferred Flooring • January 20, 2022

Did you know that carpet sales account for more US sales of a flooring material than all other flooring types combined? There's good reason for this, as carpet is generally inexpensive, easy to install and available in a massive variety of colors, textures, patterns and styles. It’s also comfortable to walk on, offers great sound reduction and is relatively easy to care for. If you’re searching for new carpet in Cincinnati, our team at Cincy Preferred Flooring can help you find the perfect option for your home or office. There are two main types that you will likely encounter during your search, loop pile and cut pile. The names of these carpet types refer to the way the carpet fibers are attached to their backing. Let’s check out the benefits of each type of carpet.

Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile means that the carpet fibers are bent into loops to be attached to their backing on each end. This type of carpet is favorable for its durability and stain-resistance. However it generally offers less cushion than its counterpart. Within the loop pile carpeting category you will find level loop, which is also known as Berber, and multi-level loop. The latter provides a flush carpet that is great for high traffic areas. If you want a more patterned and textured appearance you will want to consider multi-level loop carpeting.

Cut Pile Carpet

Cut pile means the carpet fibers are cut so they stand alone and are only attached to the backing on the bottom. This type of carpeting is usually more dense and softer than loop pile. There are multiple types of cut pile carpeting:

  • Saxony - this carpeting has a smooth finish with longer fibers
  • Plush - expect an even, smooth texture that gives it a more formal look.
  • Textured cut pile - uneven fiber lengths offer a more unique appearance.
  • Cable - thick, long fibers create a very soft carpeting.
  • Frieze - you know what it is when we call it shag carpeting!

Additionally, there are cut and loop combination carpeting options, which may be the perfect answer to your needs. Speak with one of our carpeting professionals to learn more about this type of carpet.
